We're well aware that controlling the external environment is only one side of the equation when it comes to promoting independence. Being unable to communicate with people has to be one of the most distressing, frustrating and isolating of disabilities. But as with other areas of our work, it's possible to create sophisticated electronic solutions to the problem. We've devoted substantial research expertise to the development of equipment which can supplement or entirely replace spoken communication.
Technically this field is known as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), based on Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAs). Practically, this technology means that someone who's been deprived of the capacity to communicate can regain that ability, whether that's via symbol, text or voice synthesiser.
