Life Skills Centres - Bring together Electronic Assistive Technology (EAT) and communication aids

 Intention Action Result

Life Skills Centres allow people to experience a range of different technologies which will enable them to control additional aspects of their lives. A typical centre will allow people with differing abilities to prepare for their future by gaining experience and practising key independent living skills.

Life Skills Centres will show their attendees what they are fully capable of achieving with the benefits of today’s technologies. Above all, there is the opportunity for individuals to develop and grow through the stimulation and excitement offered by a Life Skills Centre.

Current Technologies

People attending a Life Skills Centre could benefit from exposure to the following:

Communication – at all levels from symbol charts to high-tech dynamic communication aids.

Home Control – a range of Environmental Control System functions.

Computer Access – controlling computers by means other than a standard keyboard or mouse.

Wheelchair Control – driving a wheelchair by an alternative method to a joystick.

Integration - combining the technologies above to give personally appropriate rather than technological solutions.

Education – in what are the best current solutions for them and how to use these solutions to develop their lives.

Training – getting users to access and control a multitude of life enhancing skills.

Independence Skills

Increased communication abilities and interaction with peers and others.

Controlling the local environment, maintaining a secure environment, operating household devices and much more.

Using computers to control those aspects of life we all take for granted: education, entertainment, letter writing, address books, financial management, internet access and much more.

Integrating the above to allow someone to handle complex scenarios. For example: using the same single switch to drive a wheelchair to a telephone, dial a number via an Environmental Control System, hold a private phone conversation using a communication aid and finally write a letter about the conversation on a computer.
