What is an Environmental Control System?

An Environmental Control System (ECS) enables anyone to operate a wide range of domestic appliances and other vital functions by remote control.
An Environmental Control System enhances the ability of disabled or elderly people allowing independence to be maintained.
ECS can reduce reliance on the continuous help of a carer and/or family member.

ECS can control the following areas:

Security: alarm, intercom system and door lock.

Communication: telephone operation, nurse/warden call system, pager for carer.

Comfort: power sockets, lights, curtains/blinds, multifunction beds & chairs.

Entertainment: TV/teletext, satellite/cable TV, video, hi-fi, radio, page turners.

Access: door opener, window opener, lifts.

Personal Computers: via mouse and keyboard emulation and infra red.

An Environmental Control System consists of 3 main elements:

1. Input Switch: this enables the person to access the menu and operate the controller. Inputs include plate switches operated by hand foot, head, arm or chin and pneumatic switches operated by sucking and blowing.

2. Controller: this learns and stores the functions to be controlled and they are activated via a simple scanning menu format. It transmits signals by infra red (IR) and radio (RF).

3. Accessories: these are the appliances (listed above) operated remotely by the controller.
